Partial porch collapse forces Erie apartment evacuationOriginally posted at GoErie.com
A city of Erie building inspector was summoned to determine the structural integrity of the porch.
Three residents were evacuated from a west Erie apartment house Tuesday afternoon when the building’s front porch roof partially collapsed because of the weight of snow, fire officials said.
Fire crews were called to the two-story residence at 959 W. 20th St. at 4:16 p.m.
Two men who live in the downstairs apartment and one man who lives in the second story safely evacuated the building.
“I head the fire sirens, put on a jacket, opened the front door and the firefighters said ‘Don’t walk outside, the porch roof could come down any time.’ ″ said Richard Gerety, 23, who lives on the first floor. “I went out the back door. That roof is full of ice and snow.″
Fire crews put “do not enter″ tape around the perimeter of the front of the home. A city of Erie building inspector was summoned to determine the structural integrity of the porch.
