THE ASHI SCHOOL

Ancillary Classes and Education

December 4, 2024

The ASHI School offers several specialty classes that are ideal for inspectors looking to expand their services or dive deeper into niche areas of property inspection. All classes are approved for ASHI CE credits.

Notable specialty classes include:

Mold & Moisture Inspection:

This 3-day class in Des Plaines, Illinois covers everything from basic to advanced mold issues, sampling techniques, and the differences between remediation and cleaning, giving inspectors a comprehensive understanding of how to handle mold-related problems in buildings.

Radon Measurement Professional:

Offered as a 16-hour live online course, this class teaches home inspectors how to properly screen for radon—the second leading cause of lung cancer in the US. It includes preparation for the National Radon Proficiency Program exams and can be done from the comfort of home.

Commercial Building Inspection:

This 3-day virtual class helps inspectors expand into the commercial sector, covering systems unique to commercial buildings, as well as report writing and liability management. Commercial inspections are lucrative and can generate significantly more revenue than residential inspections.

Wind Mitigation & 4-Point Inspection:

Common in coastal regions, this class teaches how to conduct wind mitigation and 4-point insurance inspections, crucial for clients seeking homeowners insurance in areas prone to harsh weather. The 3-hour wind mitigation and 2-hour 4-point inspection class is Florida state–approved for CE credits.

Certified Residential Thermography:

This 2-day class teaches inspectors how to use infrared cameras for thermal imaging, helping them to identify issues like moisture intrusion, insulation problems, and electrical hot spots that are invisible to the naked eye.

Multifamily Radon Measurement:

This 8-hour live webinar teaches radon testing protocols specific to multifamily buildings. It covers the HUD requirements and ANSI-AARST standards and prepares inspectors for the AARST-NRPP add-on certification. This class is crucial for those inspecting HUD-financed multifamily residences.

Pools and Spas Inspection:

Designed for inspectors in regions where pools and spas are common, this course discusses ASHI standards for inspecting these features. It covers construction, equipment, safety, and electrical considerations.

Seawalls, Docks, A/C, and Chimneys Inspection:

This 1-day, multi-topic class focuses on inspecting seawalls, docks, heat pumps, air conditioners, and fireplaces. This course offers valuable insights for inspectors working near shorelines and helps expand expertise in A/C systems and fireplace safety.

Home Inspection Exam Prep:

This is a comprehensive live online class aimed at preparing aspiring home inspectors for their state licensing or certification exams. It covers key topics in home inspection while going through practice tests questions and is led by industry experts to help students review and retain critical knowledge.

Report Writing the Right Way & Residential Electrical Fundamentals:

This 1-day course combines two important topics. The Report Writing section focuses on how to communicate clearly with clients and avoid misunderstandings through precise and effective reports. The Residential Electrical Fundamentals section covers the basics of residential electrical systems—including voltage, amperage, and resistance—and guides inspectors on what should and shouldn’t be included in an inspection report. This course offers 4 CE credits.

Electrical Systems, Grounding and Bonding, and Testing Electrical Systems:

This 3-part series explores key electrical concepts. Electrical Systems reviews basic electrical systems and grounding/bonding essentials. Grounding and Bonding Explained takes a deeper dive into the intricacies of electrical grounding and the dangers associated with improper installation. The final section, Testing Electrical Systems, teaches inspectors how to effectively test and measure electrical components using the right tools. These combined classes offer 6 CE credits.

Inspecting Commercial Electrical Systems:

This full-day course focuses on the unique aspects of commercial electrical systems. Inspectors will learn about three-phase power, voltages, transformers, backup generators, uninterruptible power systems, and how commercial electrical systems differ from residential ones. This course is particularly important for those expanding into commercial building inspections and offers 6 CE credits.

These specialty courses enable home inspectors to broaden their service offerings, cater to niche markets, and increase their professional capabilities, thereby increasing their marketability.
