Certification or Certificate program

What’s the difference?

Curious about the difference between Certificate programs and Certification?

They each have a purpose and help serve the industry, but it’s important to know and recognize these two types of programs. Let’s look at a summary of the differences between these two programs as recognized by The Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE)

Assessment-Based Certificate Programs:

  • Purpose: Designed to provide education and training to help participants acquire specific knowledge, skills, and competencies.
  • Structure: Includes a course or series of courses with defined learning objectives.
  • Assessment: Participants are evaluated to ensure they have achieved the intended learning outcomes directly linked to the provided instruction.
  • Outcome: Successful participants receive a certificate indicating mastery of the specific content; however, this does not confer a professional designation.

ASHI has Badge Courses which would be considered certificate programs, you can find these on ASHI Edge! (ASHI badge courses are not accredited assessment-based certificate programs)

Certification Programs:

  • Purpose: Aim to validate an individual’s existing knowledge, skills, and competencies, typically related to a professional role.
  • Structure: Focus on assessing individuals against predetermined standards without providing specific training linked to the assessment.
  • Assessment: Independent of any particular education program; measures competencies acquired through various means, such as work experience or prior education.
  • Outcome: Individuals who meet the established standards earn a certification, often allowing them to use a professional designation (e.g., letters after their name) and may require periodic renewal to ensure ongoing competence.

Understanding these distinctions is crucial for organizations and individuals to select the appropriate pathway for professional development and recognition.
