Success by Association
Success by Assocation
By Tony Smith, Speaker of the CoR
“Success isn’t just about what you accomplished in your life, it’s about what you INSPIRE others to do.” (Zig Ziglar)
At the January 2014 annual Council of Representatives meeting in Nashville, ASHI’s president Bill Loden, immediate past-president Bill Jacques, president-elect Alden Gibson and executive director Frank Lesh all addressed the Council, expressing their full support and that of the Board and Staff for the success of a new Mentorship Initiative.
At their Wednesday, February 5, 2014, online meeting, ASHI’s Council of Representatives (CoR) Group Leaders and Special Task Force on Mentoring voted, after much discussion, to unanimously adopt the name “SUCCESS BY ASSOCIATION” for ASHI’s Mentorship Initiative.
The success of this initiative is the responsibility of the Council’s Representatives, working alongside their respective chapter presidents across the United States and Canada.
The 2014 Special Task Force on Mentoring is made up of:
- The Council’s Speaker and Chair of the task force
- The Alternate Speaker of the Council
- The Council’s Secretary, who is also the secretary of the task force
- All 10 Group Leaders of the Council – some Group Leaders may also be the Alternate Speaker and/or Secretary of the Council
- A past Council Speaker: The Council’s first Speaker (1995-1996) and current ASHI BoD member, Bill Sutton
- A past-president of ASHI National, (yet TBA by Council Speaker)
- A first-year ASHI BoD member, C. Blaine Illingworth (not exactly a first-year Board member)
- A third-year ASHI BoD member, Shannon E. Cory
- A protégée and graduate of The ASHI School, (yet TBA by Council Speaker)
As you can clearly see, the composition of the task force will assure that ASHI’s Council of Representatives, ASHI’s Board of Directors and The ASHI School will be working closely together with chapters, their presidents and the Special Task Force to assure measurable success for the task force’s goals and objectives.
ASHI’s Mission, “To set and promote standards for property inspections and to provide the educational programs needed to achieve excellence in the profession and to meet the needs of our members,” takes off in yet a new direction – ASHI’s Mentorship Initiative.
The sole goal of the Special Task Force and its initiative is to:
“Inspire new and existing members to reach the level of ACI and to participate in ASHI at the local and national levels.”
Some states or jurisdictions may have specific laws/rules as to the composition of their mentorship initiatives.
Nevertheless, the Special Task Force quickly rolled up its sleeves and started to work on some of the nuts and bolts of ASHI’s Mentorship Initiative. Some of the nuts and bolts or “Guidelines for the Mentorship Initiative” discussed and agreed upon are:
- There will be NO required agreement/contract between the mentor and the protégée. However, an agreement/contract shall not be prohibited. Legal counsel will be asked to develop an agreement/contract for the initiative.
- There shall be no minimum number of required ride-alongs
- State-required ride-alongs will be formally recognized by ASHI
- Any fees paid by the protégée will be left up to the mentor and the protégée.
- There shall be no time requirement for duration of the mentoring process.
- Parallel and ride-alongs are encouraged to be performed with different inspectors.
- There shall be a means of recognition for mentors.
The CoR Group Leaders/Special Task Force will meet once per month, online, for about 90 minutes as it moves the initiative forward. Meeting dates for the first half of 2014 are:
- Wednesday, 04/23/2014 @ 8 p.m. CDT – pending
- Wednesday, 05/07/2014 @ 8 p.m. CDT – pending
- Wednesday, 06/04/2014 @ 8 p.m. CDT – pending
- Wednesday, 07/23/2014 @ 8 p.m. CDT – pending
Said meeting dates and times will be published in the Council’s online CCG Forum, with links to ‘Go to Meeting.’ Said CCG Forum is an open forum for ASHI members, and all are encouraged to join in the online meeting and participate as we move the ASHI Mentorship Initiative forward.
Walk Good and Work Safe.
Much Respect.
