PFAS: What Home Inspectors Need to Know

April 21, 2026 @ 5pm CT

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), known as “forever chemicals,” are a class of man-made compounds that persist indefinitely in the environment. They contaminate drinking water and soil, move through groundwater, and accumulate in the human body over time.

The EPA estimates that nearly half of all U.S. tap water systems contain PFAS, and studies show that over 97% of Americans have PFAS in their blood. Exposure has been linked to kidney and testicular cancers, birth defects, thyroid disorders, liver damage, and high cholesterol.

For homeowners, the presence of PFAS can impact property value, water safety, and long-term health — creating new environmental and liability considerations in the home inspection and real estate markets.

This course gives home inspectors a science-based understanding of PFAS contamination, testing, regulation, remediation, and the business opportunities associated with offering PFAS testing.

Learning Objectives

·        Define PFAS and explain how these chemicals persist and spread in water and soil.

·        Identify the main sources and exposure pathways for residential contamination.

·        Understand the current EPA and state-level regulations affecting water testing and disclosure.

·        Recognize the health and financial implications of PFAS contamination for homeowners and buyers.

·        Discuss testing and remediation options for water and soil contamination.

·        Communicate PFAS findings responsibly within the scope of a home inspection.
