Advanced Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning
Most home inspectors are familiar with forced air furnaces, typical hydronic heating systems, air-to-air heat pumps, and conventional air conditioning. This advanced course expands that foundation, reviewing less common but increasingly important heating and cooling technologies such as radiant heating, multi-fuel heat pumps, geothermal heat pumps, mini-split systems, and combination boilers. Inspectors will learn how these systems function and develop strategies for inspecting them effectively.
What You Will Learn
In this 4-hour interactive class, you will:
- Heating Standards in the SoP
Understand what the Standards of Practice require, and don’t require, when it comes to inspecting heating systems.
- Heat Transfer Principles
Explore conduction, radiation, and convection, and see how they apply across different system types.
- Heat Pumps
Compare conventional and geothermal systems, including their installation, mechanics, and inspection points.
- Radiant Heating Systems
Examine electric and hydronic radiant setups, their performance, and the unique challenges they present.
- Mini-Split Systems
Learn about mini-splits and PTAC units, including design, life expectancy, and inspection strategies.
- Multi-Fuel Heating and Combination Boilers
Discover how these systems integrate multiple energy sources, their efficiencies, and how to inspect them confidently.
Class Objectives
- Techniques for inspecting advanced heating and cooling systems confidently
- Strategies for identifying common installation mistakes and safety concerns
- Approaches to applying SoP requirements effectively
- Skills to distinguish between system types and evaluate condition accurately
Class Format
ASHI Virtual Classes are designed to be engaging and participatory; this is not a long, passive webinar. Each class is a highly interactive experience led by industry professionals who guide you through real-world systems, practical questions, and in-depth examples. The small-group format fosters active learning with rich photo presentations, and practical applications tailored for both aspiring and practicing inspectors. Open dialogue is encouraged throughout the class to ensure concepts are clearly understood and directly applicable in the field.
