True to Our Mission
ASHI’s Mission Statement
To set and promote standards for property inspections and to provide the educational programs needed to achieve excellence in the profession.
With the deadline for the federal tax credit for homebuyers rapidly approaching, most of the inspectors I talk with have been very busy. By the time this column is published, the credit will have expired. I think we all are wondering how busy we will be in the coming months. The housing market certainly has not changed as quickly as we would have liked. As a matter of fact, I just saw that Las Vegas icon Wayne Newton is facing foreclosure. Other celebrities such as Nicolas Cage and Evander Holyfield are not immune either. Foreclosures are not limited to the lower or middle classes. Many economists are talking of a double dip in the housing market.
ASHI holds its own
Despite all the bad news in the media, inspectors are surviving and some are even thriving. I’m pleased to say ASHI is holding its own and is even seeing new Associates joining at a healthy clip. That’s quite an accomplishment when many other associations are suffering, some down in membership as much as 40 percent.
Plans for future influences
The ASHI Board of Directors met in April for a planning session. During the session, we tried to envision what the industry would look like a few years down the road and what our priorities should be. We all agreed that home inspections would be influenced by changes taking place within the government. More regulation, with an emphasis on energy, indoor air quality and safety were all considered to be on the horizon. Given this scenario, ASHI is positioning itself to be on the forefront in the areas of education and credentialing.
Provides tools to diversify
Through future certification programs and ASHI Education, Inc., we intend to offer our membership the tools they need to diversify their businesses,
offering a wider range of services to their clients. The ASHI Board also decided that marketing the ASHI name is more important than ever. The ASHI logo is an important benefit for our membership and through our ability to market the ASHI brand to prospective homebuyers, we hope to enhance membership value.
Supports chapters
For most of our members, participation in ASHI takes place at the chapter level. This is the place to network, form friendships and focus on local issues. Studies have shown that those who are involved benefit more than those who are not. Currently, we are looking at additional ways to support and enhance our chapters.
Important investment
There is no doubt in my mind that as we move forward, the value of your membership in ASHI remains an important investment.
