— Keep an old sheet in a plastic bucket. Use the bucket to test a sump pump, and you can throw down the sheet to catch any insulation that falls out of the attic hatch.

— Shopping bags are for more than carrying tomatoes. Keep a couple of plastic supermarket bags in your vehicle to serve as plastic booties on a muddy day.

— Keep a latex glove or  
  two in your pocket for handling those sooty dampers (and you can claim a direct link between home inspectors and brain
surgeons).

— Stretch an old pair of socks over the black rubber tips of your ladder to prevent marking the wall. (Make sure they’re not too stinky… the socks, not the walls.)
