To Whom Much is Given, Much is Required

It is amazing how quickly the year as ASHI president has gone by. It truly has been a rewarding experience serving our membership. Despite a struggling economy and the many challenges before us as an industry, ASHI remains the gold standard for the home inspection profession. What makes up the fiber of this organization is the incredible passion that our members have for what we do. There is no other group that has the incredible knowledge base, as well as the desire, to raise our standards and be the true professionals we know we are.

 It has been said that to whom much is given, much is required. With our position as the standard-bearer for the profession, we must continue to be on the cutting edge of innovation. I was chatting today with some other home inspectors about how things have changed. Reports are more comprehensive, and our clients expect more and more from our services. I believe ASHI must continue to look at the future and envision where we will be five or 10 years down the road. Technology and consumer expectations will ultimately dictate what type of service we are providing. There is no doubt that the days of the flashlight and clipboard are behind us.

 In the spirit of JFK, I would say that when you ask the question, “What has ASHI done for me lately?” I would ask, “What have you done for ASHI?” You only get out of this organization what you put into it. I know for me, personally, my business and professional development could not have occurred without what I have received from ASHI. There is so much more to this organization than how many inspections I get because of the ASHI name. Through ASHI, I have not only been on the cutting edge of developments in the profession, but I have formed lifetime friendships. We truly share a common bond through this profession, and it is has been a pleasure to exchange ideas and talk about things that only other home inspectors can understand.

 I would challenge each of you to get involved at your local chapter. Go to educational meetings and share what you have learned with others. Those who are new to the profession will be grateful to have the benefit of those who are experienced. It is not about training your competition, but about giving back to that which you have received from others.

 That said, again I would like to thank every one of you who is a member of the greatest home inspection organization, ASHI, and thank you for your support.
