Task Forces Considers Membership Category Name Changes

by Anthony Snyder May 1, 2006

The ASHI Membership Category Name Change Task Force met on March 3 in Chicago to discuss the current ASHI membership categories (Candidate and Member) and consider ways to improve upon them.

The group was charged with researching and developing new names to possibly replace current category names. This is being done to enhance membership satisfaction, boost the interest of prospects in ASHI, clarify some of the concerns/issues/confusion around the membership categories and cut down on the number of name use violations currently being handled by the ASHI Committee for Logo Use (CLU). Over the past eight months, there have been three surveys sent to random members in all categories to help gauge the level of acceptance for some of the pro-
posed category names. Further, a great many discussions have taken place between the task force and the ASHI Membership Committee, both led by Chair Scott Patterson of Jackson, Miss.

Coming out of the March 3 meeting, Task Force Chair Patterson had this to say, “Our work will need to be something that will stand the test of time. Longevity in the proposed names for our membership categories is important.”

The task force was careful to ensure that all of its discussions took place within the boundaries of the ASHI bylaws and strategic plan.

Patterson continued, “We want and need ASHI to be synonymous with home inspections. We must continue to ensure that ASHI inspectors be recognized as the leading providers in the profession. Finally, as an advocate for the profession, we need to find ways to represent the entire profession.”

During the meeting, the task force discussed ways to break down some of the barriers that were impeding our membership growth. Every discussion was peppered with a desire to continue to make ASHI larger and stronger, but not to water down any membership requirements.

“Consumers and our membership have come to expect the best from ASHI,” Patterson said. “Nothing we do will lower the bar that we have set so high.”

The task force will be continuing its research and plans to submit a formal recommendation on membership categories to the ASHI Board in time for its July 2006 meeting. For questions, members are encouraged to contact Scott Patterson at scott@traceinspections.com.
