Success

by Kurt Salomon June 1, 2011

Why do some succeed and others don’t? It comes from the use of decisions, actions and dedication. The old saying is true: “Opportunity knocks, but you have to open the door.”

We each are born with great capabilities. The differences between those who achieve and those who do not can be the choices they make and the dedicated actions they take. The first element of dedication is to develop a goal plan that will lead to your successes. In most cases, a person with greater dedication, desire and tenacity will outperform one who has more talent but less desire.

Do you rise to the occasion every day, every time? We are creatures of habit. Success begets success. If you clearly define the steps to achieve your goals, you can check the completion of each step. Then you know you have completed each one, one at a time, every time. You are the one who will make the difference. You cannot get a surrogate. They are your decisions and actions.

“One lives a life of permanent purposes, team chemistry thrives, and life decisions made are wiser and more cautious. Every single thing you do matters. You have been created as one of a kind. You have been created in order to make a difference. You have within you the power to change the world.”

These are the words of Andy Andrews (The New York Times calls him a modern-day Will Rodgers). After reading his books and quotes, this is an accurate description of Andy Andrews.

The major issue discussed at the April 2011 Board meeting was membership categories. The key tenants of change will include maintaining our core values and mores, raising the bar and providing for growth, and a change of philosophy to “Earn your stripes; Not jump through all the hoops.”

ASHI Vice President Charles Gifford has said, “ASHI needs to remain relevant in the industry. With the onset of licensing and registration, the need to join and participate in our Society is diminishing. ASHI should aggressively change our Membership categories to recognize the working professional inspector in accordance with the recommendations of the Membership Committee’s work.” I agree with these thoughts.

Over the next six months, the Board and the Membership Committee will be studying this challenge. We will be polling the membership to aid us in taking what the Board of Directors believes is the best direction for ASHI today and in the future. Please do participate when polled electronically or when this is discussed at your chapter meeting.

When your Board brings this proposal for a vote, the elements will have been vetted to the membership. We, the ASHI Board of Directors, will be listening to the Council of Representatives, the chapter presidents and the general membership. Please do communicate with the Board of Directors.
