My client happened to be a mechanical engineer and he hadn’t noticed this little gem. This was a two-story home with living space above the garage. The main beam was cut to accommodate the door opener rail.

This unusual foundation pier is a beer keg filled with concrete. The house was built during Prohibition.

Slip sliding away

JUNE03PostcardFootings1.gif
This photo shows an undermined footing on a home in Fremont, California. The cause was active water damage from seasonal high water table on the property and under the house.

JUNE03PostcardFootings2.gif
This photo is from the same property and has the same water problem, causing the pier and post to slip away from each other. The house is essentially on the verge of collapsing, at least partially.

Insect-osaurus

JUNE03PostcardBug.gif
Thought you might like to see the size of the bugs we run into here in Hawaii. I wrote the following in my report, which appeared as a caption under the photo:
LIVING ROOM  Comments: A very large insect above the front door. When I first noticed this one it was in the kitchen rummaging through the cabinets. I went out to my truck to get a shotgun but when I returned it was in the living-room, on the couch, eating a box of cheerios.

I decided not to shoot it because of the obvious clean-up problem. Though we encounter bugs regularly in Hawaii, this one is unusually large. Suggest consulting a licensed exterminator, or a zoo.
