Robert Johnson Joins ASHI’s Report Verification Team

by Allison Dziewior November 1, 2005

A talented group of applicants responded when ASHI announced an additional person was needed to verify that Candidates’ reports complied with the ASHI Standards of Practice—an important step in becoming a full ASHI Member. After much consideration, it is my pleasure to announce Robert Johnson has joined Dr. Jim Johnson, P.E.; Sherman Price, P.E.; and Kent Boucher, P.E., as an ASHI verifier.

Robert_Johnson.gif Robert “Bob” Johnson brings with him an impressive 35-year background that includes construction, remodeling, home and commercial inspection, and consulting. Active in his chapter since 1986, he is a founding member of the ASHI Georgia Chapter (formerly known as the Southeast Chapter of ASHI), and he has served his chapter as a chair and committee member. Currently retired from inspecting homes, Johnson owns a company that specializes in data management and Web site services. He also is active in the American Legion Post 316 as Junior Vice Commander. Johnson understands the importance of the ASHI Verification Process and already is busy verifying Candidates’ reports.

“My experience as a home inspector taught me the importance of not only the mechanical portion of the home inspection, but even more so the importance of adhering to the ASHI Standards of Practice and following through with proper report writing. Not only is such adherence a benefit to the industry, the profession, and the client, but it helps protect the property inspector.”

Jim_Johnson.gif Dr. Jim Johnson, P.E., is in his sixth year as an ASHI verifier. He conducted home inspections for 18 years prior to retiring as an ASHI Member. Johnson spent 30 years in private practice as a consulting engineer and a construction and forensic consultant. Currently, he is the President/CEO of a multi-diversified engineering, real estate development and construction consulting firm operating in several states. Johnson describes his current role as “being able to pass on my 30 years of engineering and construction experience in helping the Candidates perform better home inspections.”

Sherman_Price.gif Sherman Price, P.E., has also been a verifier with ASHI for the past six years. He is a Charter ASHI Member and was a speaker at ASHI’s 1st Annual Conference in 1977. Price’s early professional work as a chemical and civil engineer eventually led him into the home inspection profession. Active in the NY Metro ASHI Chapter, he has served as the secretary and president, and currently holds the position of membership chairperson. In addition to his work as an ASHI verifier, he lectures on “Engineer Wonders,” periodically teaches courses on home inspection, and is active in a computer club and civic association.

“My education as a chemical and civil engineer has provided me with solid technical knowledge of a house’s mechanical and electrical components and structural framing. I believe that a good deal of my career work has significantly contributed to my work as a verifier.”

Kent Bocher, P.E., who currently is on a leave, also is a valued member of the report verification team.

Candidates are eligible to go through the ASHI report verification process once they have completed 50 fee-paid home inspections. To start the process, the Candidate faxes, mails or e-mails a list of the 50 inspection dates and addresses to ASHI HQ. Five inspections are selected at random, and the Candidate is asked to mail copies of those five full reports to HQ. A verifier is selected at random to review the reports for substantial compliance (90 percent adherence) to the ASHI Standards of Practice.
