Request for ASHI’s Expertise Just Keep Coming
• National Institute of Science invited ASHI to send a representative to a two-day workshop on mold issues in Maryland at the end of the month. Rob Paterkiewicz, ASHI executive director will attend on behalf of the Society.
• The National Association of Home Builders followed up discussions with ASHI with a request to its members to suggest how new construction home inspections can be handled for the best interests of buyers.
• Rob Paterkiewicz, ASHI executive director, and Bob Kociolek, ASHI director of chapter relations and state affairs, participated in a panel discussion earlier this month at the annual conference of the Association of Real Estate Licensing Law Officials (ARELLO).
• National Council of Fire Marshals contacted ASHI for help promoting a wire testing tool for home use.

“ASHI’s consumer education campaign is working,” ASHI Member John Horsman, Southern Home Inspection Services, declared.
He sent the Sunday, August 18, 2002, Brevard County (Melbourne) Florida Today newspaper Real Estate Section to HQ to illustrate his point. The lead article, “Inspectors group wants tougher rules,” featured photos of and quotes from ASHI Members and Candidates. According to John, the newspaper had received information on model legislation from ASHI prior to contacting local Members.
Brown W. Higginbotham, Higginbotham Inspections in Bakersfield, Calif. said he worked a long time to get an article in his local paper, Bakersfield Californian.
The end result was an in-depth article of interviews with ASHI Members or Candidates, exclusively.
ASHI Member Tom Corbett, Tomacor, Inc., was featured in the October issue of Chicago Magazine.
ASHI Member Charles Bellefontaine, Chicagoland Home and Building Inspectors, participated in a talk show produced by Joliet Junior College, and broadcast on WJOL, “Voice of Joliet.”
Scott Jensen, Professional Property Inspections, in Mandan, N.D. was pictured in the low confines of a crawl space in The Bismarck Tribune. He and Glen Naumann, Private Home Inspections, Inc. in Bismarck, were quoted and identified as ASHI Members in the article, “Home Inspections: peace of mind for your investment.”
Donald Lovering, President of the New England Chapter of ASHI, was quoted in the Boston Herald, in the article, “List of inspectors is scrutinized.”
Consultants keep ASHI before the public
Publicis Dialogue reported numerous recent contacts with the media on ASHI’s behalf.
• Developed and distributed “ASHI Study Shows Not All State Home Inspector Laws Work Equally Well; Model Legislation Proposed as Connecticut, Mississippi and New Jersey Set The Pace” press release to national media.
• Developed and distributed 25 individual White Paper press releases for each state with existing home inspector regulation.
State distribution: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
• Provided ASHI brochures and information on what to look for in a home inspector to the San Antonio Express-News.
• Worked with producer Loren Goldfarb at the D.I.Y. Network in Washington D.C., providing contacts for her story on mold.
• Provided background information to Bob Horton of Escapehomes.com. Arranged for Stephen Gladstone to write a column for the Web site about home inspections on a second and/or vacation home.
• Answered questions about ASHI from Gene Koprowski of the Washington Post.
• Provided background information on the home inspection industry to Phyllis Morris at Broker – Agent Magazine in Tucson.
• Provided information on home inspections and growth of the home inspection industry to the Bakersfield Californian.
• Arranged interview with Mike Casey for Mauricio Pedraza, a reporter at the La Opinion in California on air conditioning.
• Put Peter Poksa at The Record in touch with ASHI chapters in New Jersey.
While the Society reaches out at the national level to connect with organizations of similar interests, individual home inspectors work to establish relationships with local newspapers and broadcasters. Supporting efforts at all levels, ASHI’s public relations consultants produce a steady stream of press releases, escort ASHI leadership on media tours and assist the Public Relations Committee in its mission to promote ASHI and the home inspection profession to the general public, related industry organizations and home inspectors. ASHI has become the “go-to” organization for anyone who wants to know about home inspection.
