Report Out from the January 15, 2013, ASHI Board of Directors Meeting
This is a report to the ASHI membership of the actions taken during the meeting. It is not the official minutes as discussion items and withdrawn or failed motions are not included. The official minutes of this meeting will be presented for Board approval at its next meeting on April 19, 2013, in Rosemont, Ill.
Members are encouraged to review the report in order to be informed of actions taken on their behalf. They also are encouraged to contact ASHI officers and directors with their questions.

The following motions were passed.
ASHI staff will create an online log of ASHI media articles with direct links when possible.
The Membership History Chart will be included in the ASHI Board Book on an ongoing basis.
- Upon review of legal counsel, the Sears Coupon Program will be brought back to the ASHI Board for final approval.
- JD Grewell was chosen to serve on the 2013 Executive Director Evaluation Committee.
- The Home Score Task Force was granted ASHI Board approval to continue its efforts and report back to the board at its April meeting.
The ASHI Board went into executive session including the newly elected directors, officers and Speaker of the Council of Representatives. On return, it took the following actions:
- ASHI took a position on smoke alarms:
- All homes must be equipped with smoke alarms.
- Given recent studies, ASHI recommends the use of photoelectric smoke alarms instead of ionization smoke alarms or combination smoke alarms.
- ASHI recommends that consumers educate themselves on this matter and decide what best meets their needs.
• Proposed changes to membership categories will be presented to voting members in 90 days.
• The following recruiting initiative will be reviewed by the Board at its April meeting
- ASHI staff will solicit at least three bids from national list maintenance companies to develop an annually updated list of the home inspectors in the United States and Canada.
- ASHI staff will work with the Membership Committee and Public Relations Committee to develop a recruiting plan to grow ASHI membership 5% as of December 31, 2013 as compared to December 31, 2012.
- ASHI staff in conjunction with the Chapter Relations Committee will develop a plan whereby the national home inspector database would be offered to the chapters at cost if the chapters desire to do mailings to promote their education/chapter meetings
• The Policy and Procedures Manual Section 2.13.B.3.c Committee Structure was changed as follows:
As of calendar year 2007, Committee size should not be more than 8 people including the Chair and Board Liaison unless in conflict with the ASHI Bylaws or as approved by the Finance Committee. The committee size will be sufficient to serve the needs of the committee. If there is to be a face-to-face meeting, there is a guideline of a maximum of eight people including the Chair and Board Liaison. In any event the face-to-face meeting will be approved by the Finance Committee. The Officer Nominating Committee and any other committee so specified in the Bylaws are exempt from this policy.
