Relationships & PR Program Keep ASHI in the News

by Sandy Bourseau October 1, 2010

In May 2008, ASHI was invited to help the North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA) and Simpson Strong-Tie kick off Deck Safety Month® with a nationwide campaign to educate homeowners about ensuring their decks are safe and secure.

A widely distributed press release titled “Is Your Deck Safe? Experts say 20 Million American Decks could be at Risk” included quotes from ASHI, and ASHI members participated in three safety workshops hosted by The Home Depot. (See the June 2008 Reporter article.)

ASHI again was invited to join Simpson Strong-Tie, but this year partnering with the Home Safety Council. The campaign included a press release and a media conference call with the following participants.

  • Jennifer Tallmadge, deck safety advocate—Jennifer survived a 40-foot fall when the deck she was on collapsed from under her; the deck had not been built properly
  • Meri-K Appy, president, Home Safety Council
  • Ricardo Arevalo, VP of engineering, Simpson Strong-Tie
  • Jack McGraw, director, American Society of Home Inspectors

Simpson Strong-Tie is an Affiliate Gold ASHI member and its structural hardware helps people build safer, stronger homes and decks. The Home Safety Council is the only national  non-profit organization solely dedicated to preventing injuries in and around the home.
