Members Making News

by Sandy Bourseau March 1, 2005

ASHI Member Brian Koepf, Brian Koepf & Assoc., Reston, Va., was quoted in the January 14, 2005 issue of the Washington Times: ‘“If you don’t choose the right home inspection company, then the entire inspection can be fruitless.”’

The article, “Wise Buyer Also Buys Thorough Inspection,” was based on an interview with Koepf and was published in the Home Guide section. He also said, ‘“Most Realtors® will recommend several home inspectors that they have worked with or had recommended to them by other agents, but it is the buyers’ responsibility to do the research and check the credentials of the home inspector they choose.”’

Based on the information he provided, the article included the following: “Consumers can check an inspector’s credentials with ASHI (American Society of Home Inspectors) on the Web at www.ashi.org.”

In 2004, Koepf and ASHI Candidate Jiri Danihel inspected two condominiums for the Trading Spaces television show that airs on the Discovery Learning Channel. One condo was inspected in Arlington, Va., in May and the second in Washington, D.C., in June.

ASHI Member Authors article

The Texas Association of Realtors® published an article by ASHI Member James Hemsell, A Closer Look Inspection Services, Denton, Texas entitled “Take a Closer Look at Inspectors. New Requirements Create Flood of Rookies,” in the January issue of its magazine. The article covered changes made to the state’s home inspector licensing program by the Texas Real Estate Commission.

Second PSA campaign starts strong

According to Lisa Gunggoll, ASHI’s public relations consultant, the first wave of results for airings of the second round of Public Service Announcements (PSAs) is strong. From December 21, 2004, through January 31, 2005, 28 airings
were reported, accounting for 43,932 audience impressions and $2,412 value (equivalent cost of paid advertising).

Airings were strong on the Fox station in Macon, Ga., a welcome response since that state had no airings in the 2004 distribution of the PSAs. The spots were also shown in New Hampshire, another market that was weak in the 2004 distribution.

Gunggoll said she and WestGlen, the distribution company, are contacting stations encouraging them to use the PSAs. She’d received commitments from KUWB in Salt Lake City and KWHD in Denver. Since they were sent out in two tiers (southern states, then northern states), airings are expected to increase in the coming weeks.

In 2004, the total PSA audience was more than five million for a media value of $177,499. Based on this positive response, it was decided to distribute them one more time. Visit ASHI.org to view the announcements as well as ASHI’s Video News Releases.
