Meet a Home Inspector and Teacher Who Always Learns More at Inspection World
“I’ve been a home inspector and ASHI member for 22 years, and I attend Inspection World every year. My goal when I go to Inspection World is to learn
something new, check out new tools and gadgets, network with old friends and get fired up to improve and increase my business.” says Miki Mertz, ACI,
Complete Home Inspection, Kansas City.
“Inspection World is special. You stay current and are inspired by the latest developments and approaches. With five different educational tracks, there’s
always a topic I’m interested in, even though I’ve attended for years. I also enjoy going to the basic level courses because it is a good reminder of how I
should be inspecting and I always pick up something new.”
“Even if your chapter offers education, I encourage you to attend Inspection World because of the high quality of education. And, I really enjoy meeting
and networking with inspectors from all over the country who attend. We have so much in common. I have become friends with some of them for over 20 years.”
For her third time teaching at Inspection World, Miki will discuss how to “Improve Your Report Writing, Improve Your Business.” This is a repeat course
session from last year due to high ratings. “We all need to constantly tweak our reports so they continue to stay fresh.” She has also taught at both the
ASHI Great Plains and Great Lakes Chapters and co-founded the Midwest Inspectors Institute. Miki was the first woman to serve as a member of the ASHI
National Board of Directors and also among the first women in the nation to become an ASHI certified home inspector.
Before becoming a home inspector, Miki taught in the public school system. She feels that a home inspection is an educational experience. “I like teaching
people about their chosen house.”
“Visiting vendor exhibits in Expo Hall is a great way to learn how to use tools correctly and how to use technology and tailor it to your goals,” Miki
notes. “Talking to vendors is very interesting and helps you understand the tool and its larger context.” For example, through networking, she learned more
about websites. A referral led her to build a new, dynamic site and explore other marketing opportunities…increasing her business.
Whether you’re a new or a very experienced home inspector, “Don’t be afraid to ask fellow home inspectors questions. They love to share their knowledge and
stay in touch no matter where you live…wonderful ongoing networking for ASHI members.” Miki also encourages you to create or suggest a program for
Inspection World.
“Just keep learning…be like a sponge.”
