From the Speaker: Responsibilities

by Howard Pegelow October 1, 2009

“Responsibilities.” What does this mean? When does it start? It started back when we attended school and needed to study. It started when we were assigned chores to do. It started when we decided we’d be home inspector professionals. It started way back when we decided to be involved. We joined fellow inspectors in seeking out the best. We joined ASHI.

Yes, we all joined ASHI. We have come to know that ASHI means Stability, Oneness, Top and Second to None. We joined as associates or candidates. We worked hard and became members with full-status privileges. Of course, many of our fellow members are still working within the several levels of membership, with all seeking the just-deserved recognition. We all are doing our singular part as members of many who are ASHI. It is our mission and goal. It is our responsibility!

Responsibility comes to all of us in many forms of personal involvement within ASHI. Some of us are members at large, (not affiliated with a chapter); others belong to a chapter. All have a responsibility to be aware of what is going on in the chapters and the association, and to stand up and be heard. It is not only our duty, but our responsibility.

Responsibility requires involvement. Some members are willing to let others do it. Yes, we vote for our chapter and national leaders. Yes, we read the Reporter and First Thing and occasionally enter the ASHI forum. At times, there is a hue ’n’ cry about what ASHI must do or not do. All too often, there are perceived lines drawn as to which side someone is on. This isn’t unity. This is separation. We are many, but more importantly, we are one … our responsibility!

The Council of Representatives was created to be a voice. It’s the voice of and for the members. The council holds the responsibility from the membership. Your council members are responsible to one entity … you and only you!

ASHI’s Leadership Training Conference will be held this month. Each chapter must decide who should represent its members. Council members will be attending. I sincerely ask each of you to consider talking with your chapter leaders and accept the position of council representative. For those of you who don’t belong to chapters, please consult with fellow members in forming non-affiliated groups authorizing council representation. This is responsibility and it is yours.

Questions, everyone has questions. Please consult with your assigned council reps or contact any of the group leaders. Please contact me, as speaker, or the alternate speaker. We are all here for you. We sincerely would like your consideration in joining your entity, the Council of Representatives.

Please join in on the ASHI discussion forum!
