From the Editor: Working for You Behind the Scenes
Nowhere do the winds of change blow more often than in Washington, D.C. Nevertheless, ASHI remains the voice of the home inspection profession, in no small part due to one smart lobbyist.
In an age of partisanship, Randall Pence of Capitol Hill Advocates has managed to work with whomever those winds blew in or out, always championing ASHI, the profession and consumer protection.
Pence was hired more than a decade ago when influential groups in Washington politics were portraying home inspectors and inspections as unneeded, redundant, an unnecessary service and cost.
“In fact,” Pence said, “HUD was preparing a national PSA campaign advising homebuyers that a beefed-up appraisal — the Enhanced Appraisal — was all they needed to find defects in a home.”
He was hired and successfully lobbied Congress to pressure HUD to stop the campaign. The agency relented.
With the wind now blowing his way, Pence successfully turned HUD in favor of home inspections and, with support from the membership, established ASHI as the voice of the profession and a protector of consumers’ best interests. He also gives the membership an inside track to government housing-related activities.
If you’re curious about all that has been accomplished on your behalf since 2000, enter “Pence” in the search function of the online ASHI Reporter (www.ashireporter.org).
You may be pleasantly surprised at the results and thankful that ASHI’s leaders had the foresight to believe nurturing a long-term relationship with the federal government was in your best interests.
