FAQs on the ASHI Continuing Education Program

by Edited by ASHI Staff September 1, 2008

Members have been calling and e-mailing ASHI HQ with questions about how to complete the Continuing Education (CE) claim form they received with their annual dues notices. Here are some of the frequently asked questions with answers.

Q.  I found a class that I am really interested in, but it is not approved for ASHI CE. Will it count?

A. We strongly recommend looking for ASHI-related classes, courses or meetings, which are listed on the ASHI Web site.  Because ASHI realizes some members must take specific courses to meet various licensure or certification requirements, additional courses are considered for CE approval on a case-by-case basis. Send information about the class with a request for approval in writing to sarahw@ashi.org.

Q. The form I received in the mail is missing a line. Can I use it?

A. We apologize for the error and suggest you download the revised form from www.homeinspector.org or use the one e-mailed to you with your dues notice.

Q. I have Continuing Education hours to carry over from last year. Can you tell me what categories to place them in?

A. Place all carryover credits in the carryover category regardless of the topic of the courses they cover. Category maximums apply only to the continuing education hours earned during the current year.

Q. I don’t have my required 20 CEs. What should I do?

A. Have you used SmartTrack? Every member can earn FREE CEs online through SmartTrack. If you need more information or a login number and password, please call (847-759-2820) or e-mail hq@ashi.org.

Q. When do I owe CEs?

A. CE requirements are based on when you joined ASHI. If you joined ASHI prior to October 1, 2007, please submit a claim form reporting a minimum of 20 CEs by Sept. 30, 2008.

If you claim more than 20 CE hours this year, you may carry over up to 10 toward next year’s required 20.

If you joined ASHI on or after October 2, 2007, you will need to renew your membership by paying your annual dues, but you do not need to report continuing education (CE) hours until next year (Sept. 30, 2009).

Retired Members are not required to submit CEs.

Q. I attended InspectionWorld in New Orleans. Do I need to send in a form?

A.   No, you do not need to send in a claim form. We have already entered 20 CE hours for all InspectionWorld attendees in our database. If you have additional CE hours to report, you can fill out and return the form, but please do not include CEs earned at InspectionWorld.
