Destination Albuquerque: Roses and sharks and bears –
Looking for a way to get back to nature while you’re in Albuquerque? Well, look no
further then the Albuquerque Biological Park, which highlights native species found in the Rio Grande River Valley. As the home of the Albuquerque Aquarium, Rio Grande Botanic Garden and Rio Grande Zoo, the “BioPark” is located just a short walk away from our host hotels, and each offers a fascinating way to while away an afternoon or two.
The Albuquerque Aquarium features shimmering tanks of exotic fish in their saltwater habitats. While there, you can walk through an eel cave before approaching a 285,000-gallon tank full of sharks patrolling their underwater domain. Other fascinating exhibits include the Gulf Coast, with estuarine species and an authentic shrimp boat; an artificial coral reef, and a combined ray and shorebird display.
Located just across the plaza from the Aquarium, The Rio Grande Botanical Garden showcases plant life of the Southwest and other arid regions of the world. The facility includes a garden conservatory, a butterfly pavilion, a children’s fantasy garden, a Spanish-Moorish garden, a ceremonial garden and acres of plants native to this region and the Mediterranean.
Your third stop on this “Albuquerque Nature Tour” is just up the road from the other two attractions – The Rio Grande Zoo. This ever-evolving favorite attraction of the city exhibits over 1,000 animals representing over 200 species. You can visit an award-winning 350,000 gallon Sea Lion exhibit; Koala Creek, (featuring Australian Wildlife); and the new Inukshuk Bay Polar Bear exhibit. Overall, the Zoo allows you to explore the diversity of animal life in naturalistic habitats.
All of the BioPark attractions are open daily from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., and feature, restaurants and gift shops to satisfy all of your dining and shopping needs. So if you’re looking for a change of pace…and a change of scenery while in town, be sure to visit the Albuquerque Biological Park.
