Committees Complete First Year With New Strategic Plan

by Edited by ASHI Staff March 1, 2005

Thank you committee volunteers.

It was a new era for the society’s standing committees in 2004. In the past, committees worked independently of each other in response to requests from the Board of Directors, and they completed individual work plan reports at the end of the year. With the approval of the new strategic plan in January, 2004, committees had specific tactics within overlapping responsibilities for the first two of the three main areas of the plan: Membership Value (MV) and Performing The ASHI Experience (PAE). The third area of the plan, ASHI as Advocate, was set aside for a task force charged with developing and presenting strategies and tactics to the board. The task force continues its work into 2005.

Integrated activity report goes to board

As committees completed the first year of the new era, their activities were presented to the Board of Directors in one report—the Year-End Work Area Status Report for 2004. It reflected their current integrated approach to participating in the governance of the society.

Highlights from the Status Report included the following.

  • Members of the California Real Estate Inspection Association (CREIA), and of the Texas Association of Real Estate Inspectors (TAREI) were offered a fast track to ASHI membership.
  • More than 4,000 nonmembers from state listings of licensed inspectors were contacted and encouraged to join ASHI.
  • The Adopt-a-Chapter program was continued.
  • •Chapters used the Chapter Grant Approval Form to apply for and receive $193,000 in The ASHI Experience funds earmarked for their use.
  • Chapter CDs with tools for using The ASHI Experience locally were distributed to all chapter presidents and the same information was made available on the ASHI Web site. Mentoring and recruitment programs were included.
  • ASHI had a high profile at industry conferences, such as the National Association of Realtors® and the Institute of Home and Business Safety (IHBS)
  • Sessions at the annual Chapter Leadership Event covered public relations programs that work, media placement and raising non-dues revenue.
  • ASHI continued to work with allied organizations to develop additional inspector markets for members and to raise awareness of ASHI’s commitmeny to the consumers (IBHS, FLASH, Home Depot, Kidde).
  • The ASHI Experience PowerPoint presentations were delivered to all chapters with DVDs of Public Service Announcements and Video News Rolls to inform the membership and to use at local real estate and home shows.
  • Monthly press releases were distributed to chapter presidents.
  • Sample chapter brochures were posted on ASHI Membership Extranet.

Ready for next year

In December, 2004 committee chairs for the new year met to revamp the tactics and action items in the overall work plan to ensure a smoother interaction between them as they work to get things done.

Committee volunteers are the backbone of the organization

ASHI is an organization of volunteers. All the committee chairs and members are home inspectors who take time away from their business and personal lives because they believe in this organization. In 2004, more than 100 members served on committees and deserve recognition for their service.
