Calling for InspectionWorld presenters—deadline April 15
The Education Committee is reviewing presenter materials for InspectionWorld, January 13-15, 2005, Austin, Texas. The Call for Presentations form is available under Downloads on the Members Extranet or by request from hq@ashi.org
“Report Out” like being in the Board Room
An annual work plan based on ASHI’s new Strategic Plan won the approval of the Directors at their January meeting. These work plans are being delivered to standing committees this month. A recap of this action and others taken at the quarterly meeting was provided to you by your Executive Director, Rob Paterkiewicz, in Report Out, a newsletter e-mailed to the leadership in late February.
Report Out will be e-mailed and posted in the Downloads section of the Members Extranet after Board meetings. An agenda, committee reports and financial statement are posted on the Web site in this section prior to quarterly board meetings. Take a look to see what your Board is doing for you.
Electing a Treasurer
The election process is in full swing. Council Representatives elected the members of the Officers Nominating Committee. The voting closed March 30, 2004. Meanwhile, ASHI Officer Nomination Matrix forms have been coming into HQ for the committee to review and use to select who they will recommend to voting
Members for the office of treasurer.
In addition to the person recommended by the Nominating Committee, names can be placed on the slate by petition. The petition form and procedures are available from HQ.
Paterkiewicz announces favorable ruling
Last year, a complaint concerning ASHI was filed with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. Jointly filed by four companies with the Commission and with 20 separate state departments and Attorneys General, it alleges ASHI is operating as a franchisor in violation of federal and state laws that pertain to franchisors.
While ASHI continues to cooperate fully with all requests related to this complaint, we are pleased to have received a copy of a five-page favorable ruling from our home state Attorney General’s office that indicates ASHI is not acting as a franchise; rather, ASHI is operating as an association.
We hope other states and even the FTC will recognize this important ruling and choose not to pursue this complaint. It is unfortunate ASHI has to expend legal fees and time on this matter. Certainly our preference is to spend that money and time on helping the membership. We hope this complaint quickly will become a closed matter, and we appreciate the support shown by our membership.
Web site’s growing pains
In the launch of a product of any complexity, there comes a point when a decision is made to release the product, even knowing it may not be perfect.
One reason is no amount of simulation can predict what will happen when a (real-life) load is placed on the product. Unfortunately, several difficult problems were exposed in areas that had been working in the test environment.
There are several innovative additions in the new site that now function as designed. We hope inspectors, others in our profession and the general public will find these innovations useful.
We apologize for any troublesome experiences users may have had with the launch of the new site. In the future, we hope to give adequate warning regarding areas to be worked on, and to keep disruptions to a mini-mum. Please continue to send your feedback to HQ. We take the opinions of the Membership seriously, and use the feedback to continually try to improve our service to you.
