Attention commercial inspectors

by Edited by ASHI Staff January 1, 2002

A new CD toolkit from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) uses computer technology to simplify calculating load calculations.

“ASHRAE Toolkit for Building Load Calculations” contains the FORTRAN 90 source code needed for the new heat balance load calculation procedures introduced in the 2001 ASHRAE Handbook, Fundamentals.

The information was developed as part of ASHRAE Research Project 987.
“Engineers like to see and know how things work,” Curtis Pedersen, principal investigator, said. “This is why they generally are skeptical of black box calculation programs and why the toolkits are important. They make the underlying physics of the processes used in load and energy calculation procedures open and available for inspection and understanding.”

The “Toolkit” contains chapters on building heat balance, environmental conditions, solar radiation, transient heat conduction through the building envelope, convective heat transfer, infiltration and ventilation, internal gains and general utilities.

It brings together all parts of the simulation represented by the “HVAC 1 Toolkit: A Toolkit for Primary HVAC System Energy Calculation” and “HVAC 2: Toolkit Algorithms and Subroutines for Secondary HVAC Systems Energy Calculations.”
The cost of the Toolkit for Building Load Calculations CD is $265 ($209 for ASHRAE members).
