ASHI in Action at NAR® Show
More than 20,000 people attended the Realtors® Conference & Expo in Chicago in November. From start to finish, the Expo floor buzzed with the activity of interested attendees and attentive exhibitors. Friday night saw lines of people eagerly waiting for the opening of the Expo floor. At the close of each day, attendees reluctantly left.
Drawn to the ASHI booth by the aroma of freshly popped corn, many attendees stayed to learn more about the Society from local Members who volunteered to work the high-traffic show.
Volunteers guided interested visitors through the Find an Inspector function via the live feed to ASHI’s Web site. Time after time, real estate professionals pointed to the computer screen as they recognized the names of ASHI home inspectors that appeared after they entered a zip code, city or state in the search engine.
Along with the demonstration, ASHI volunteers offered a CD that provides a downloadable Find the Inspector button for computer desktops and highlights of findings from the ASHI/NAR State of the Industry study. More than 1,500 attendees walked away with the CD and ASHI literature.
Copies of the ASHI Standards of Practice and Home Inspections: A guide for real estate professionals were also available.
The Society is pleased to recognize the following volunteers including those who worked the show as well as the two who agreed to stand-by in case last minute replacements were need.

Steve Preins, ASHI public relations committee chair; John Ghent, ASHI president; and Rob Paterkiewicz, ASHI executive director, provided a leadership presence in the booth. Ghent, Paterkiewicz, and Jim Jones, ASHI membership and education director, also took advantage of the show to meet with real estate transaction professionals.
In addition to Jones, ASHI staffers Judy Delvoye, Sandy Bourseau, Heather Henning and Carlos Tabora took a turn in the booth.
Next year, ASHI will be calling on the Membership in the New Orleans area to work at NAR Expo 2002. Educating others on the important role home inspectors play in the real estate transaction process is always worthwhile… it can also be exhilarating! Just ask those who worked in Chicago.
