GLC-ASHI Peer/Education Review

ASHI Great Lakes Chapter held a Peer/Education Review in Mount Prospect, Illinois on July 19, 2013. As stated on the GLC sign placed in front of the house: “A Peer Review challenges and educates those members taking part to become better inspectors, and subsequently provide
better service to the public.”

The Peer Review format is for the Peer Panel Members to go through a house and do an inspection to the ASHI Standard of Practice. This house was built around 1965 with no real upgrades. The reviewers then meet and discuss their findings of defects found, and as a group they decide upon the must find-defects.

The reviewers came up with approximately 15-20 defects. The group then decided which were the ten “must finds.” Four of the must finds were in the crawl space, and one was in the attic. So half were in areas where people
do not go and are not nice places.

The Peer Inspectors then go through the house individually and perform the inspection. They are each given about two hours to inspect and then an hour to present their findings of the house to the Peer Panel. In addition to the presentation of the findings of the house, the peer inspectors take a 30-question home inspection test. Lastly, the peer committee reviews two sample reports of the peer inspector.

In the Education Program a peer committee member takes the education students through the house and points out the must-find defects. Other items of note in the house are pointed out and discussed.

It is of significant note that two of the Peer Inspectors were highly knowledgeable, respected and experienced inspectors, each of whom has done over 10,000 inspections. They went through the process, inspected the house and presented their findings to the peer committee.

David Bunker is the immediate past chair of the peer review committee from 2006-2013. He took the peer review because: “You are only as good as your last inspection. One way to remain sharp is to be checked periodically by a panel of your peers. It’s not just for new inspectors. Every one of us can and will learn something every time we sit on a review committee or take the peer review ourselves.” Kurt Mitenbuler, a frequent poster on the ASHI forum stated, “I was curious. I got the chance to say hello to old friends, including you, and think about how I look at houses.”
