Chapter Description

The American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) is the oldest and most respected professional association for independent home inspectors. Founded in 1976, this not-for-profit organization has promoted excellence through its Standards of Practice (SOP) and Code of Ethics (CoE).

ASHI Members subscribe to ASHI’s CoEs, which prohibit them from engaging in conflict-of-interest activities that might compromise their objectivity. This is the consumer’s assurance that the inspector will not, for example, use the inspection to solicit repair work.

To be recognized as Members of ASHI, inspectors must pass a rigorous written examination, which tests their knowledge of residential construction, inspection criteria, and defect-recognition. They must also pass the written examination for the SOP and CoEs. Further, the inspector must complete a minimum of 250 fee-paid inspections before certification as a Member is granted.
