People ask me about how to market their home inspection businesses all the time in my position. I know that most expect me to talk about creating an integrated marketing plan with market segmentation, or SEOs, or social media marketing (the hot trend nowadays). But the first thing I believe a home inspector should do to market himself
(or herself) is to look in a mirror and ask some questions.Do I look professional on the job?
Do I act like a professional on the job?
Do I do a professional job on the site?
It seems so simple. Yet, you can have the biggest marketing firm in New York working for you and bringing you leads, but if you show up on the site looking like slob who isn’t listening to the client and performs incompetently, word will get out. Think about it. You may not always notice when a waitress is doing a good job or a hotel desk clerk behaves professionally, but you do remember when one is rude and incompetent. And from then on you oftentimes associate that company with those employees’ bad behavior. Professionalism is the number one marketing tool, in my opinion. Worry about how you present yourself and do your job first and foremost. You will be the better for it in the long run—as will ASHI. And it will provide you with a big step up when you move forward with your marketing efforts.
