NOVA ASHI brought together code officials, home inspectors and homebuilders to discuss pre-drywall home inspections and building code enforcement.
On Saturday, October 19, a seven-hour seminar was conducted at two houses under construction in Vienna, Virginia. Limited to 100 attendees, the seminar was filled weeks ahead of the date. The Virginia Building and Code Officials Association (VBCOA) covered the development of codes; the differences in enforcement and interpretation between the counties, as well as handling problems when code violations are found.
ASHI President Michael Casey, co-author of Code Check, participated in the framing segment, and was one of several hands-on field instructors.
The houses were made available by Engle Homes Inc. and were used to provide attendees with the scope of a pre-drywall inspection, and the handling of building code issues that arise.
David Drewry, president of the Virginia Association of Real Estate Inspectors (VAREI), along with several directors and officers of VAREI; and two representatives appointed to the Department of Professional Regulation (DPOR) by the Governor of Virginia attended.

Fairfax Station, VirginiaOhio Home Inspectors’ Study Group joins forces with North Central Chapter of Ohio
In its fifth successful year, the study group has seen many of its new inspectors and Candidates become ASHI Members. It seemed natural to combine the talents of the two organizations. Meeting the second Thursday of each month for three hours with a highly qualified speaker, the group is made up of local competitors who have formed close bonds, and are always ready to help each other.
Study group attendance varies from 12 to 20 home inspectors each session, who can earn MRCs for participating. Strictly for educational purposes, it is not connected to any Chapter meeting.
We suggest that other home inspectors may benefit by forming local study groups, especially those who are too far from chapter meetings to attend regularly. For suggestions, contact me by phone, 330 361-1615.
