To the editor:
I strongly object to Victor Faggella’s characterization of his response, to Ms. Swandby’s article, as being accurate and unprejudiced history. Concerning Jimmy Carter: The interest rates suffered during his presidency were a consequence of events occurring prior to his administration. His actions resulted in a dropping of interest rates during the Reagan administration. As Mr. Faggella himself points out, taxes are a consequence of congressional actions, for the most part, certainly.
Furthermore, it wasn’t Carter’s fault hostages were held for more than a year in Iran. As a matter of fact, the hostages have said they were grateful that no rescue attempt was executed (thankfully, our troops bungled the one attempt in the Arabian Desert) because it would have resulted in a blood bath in which many of them would have died. They all came back to their families.
Furthermore, praise for Ronald Reagan is sorely misplaced. Due to his irresponsibility, the entire Carter energy policy was dismantled. Had the visionary energy policy Carter initiated 30 years ago been continued, America would be in a much stronger position today. We could have eliminated our reliance on foreign fossil fuels and created millions of jobs building an alternative energy infrastructure here in the United States. That would have eliminated the need for a bloated military budget and foreign wars that waste our blood and treasury, and probably we would have avoided our current near economic catastrophe. When Ronald Reagan was asked by the press why he dismantled and removed the solar panels that Jimmy Carter had installed on the roof of the White House, he responded, “Solar panels on the roof of the White House sends a message to the American people and to the world that America is weak and vulnerable. It sends a bad signal.” Space prohibits a retelling of all the reasons this presidency was a disaster.
And Mondale’s telling the truth about the need to raise taxes due to the growing deficit (thanks, Reagan) sunk his presidential bid.Nicholas C. Kuvach, ASHI Certified Inspector
