How do I become a home inspector?

Considerable experience, training and expertise are required for proper performance in this profession. No single source of experience, information or course is sufficient to become a home inspector or launch a competent practice in the field. In other words, it's not as easy as it looks. How do I join ASHI?

Easy, fill out the online application or print out and send in.

What are the membership categories and requirements?

Everyone joins as an Associate. As you complete the requirements you move up to Associate with Logo Use and finally to ASHI Certified Inspector. Click here for a detailed description of membership categories and requirements.

How does ASHI verify that my reports have been performed in compliance with the ASHI Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics?

We ask that you send in a list of 50 of your most recent fee paid inspections. ASHI will randomly select five inspections from that list, and request that you submit copies of those five full reports. They will be verified in accordance to the ASHI Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.

How do I prove I have performed the required number of fee paid inspections?

You will be mailed a personalized affidavit of completion that you will need to sign, date and have notarized attesting to the required number of inspections.

ASHI@Home
Are you looking for quality home inspection education, but don't have the time to commit to a fixed class schedule? ASHI and Carson Dunlop & Associates, Ltd. have designed a comprehensive distance learning training program.

Smart Track
Free to the ASHI membership, the Smart Track online education program covers the core subjects of ASHI's Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.

ASHI Chapters
An excellent source of information and training is your local chapter of ASHI. All members are strongly encouraged to join a local chapter. To find your local Chapter click here.

Other Education Providers
Many private firms offer training courses for home inspectors ranging from study manuals to live on site training. The quality varies widely. Some of those private firms are listed on our site here.

Members Only Section
Another source of information and answers to questions are the discussion forums available in the Members Only section of this Web site (available to ASHI members only).

Is the ASHI@HOME training course required for Membership?

ASHI@HOME is not required to join. It is the only program that ASHI endorses for education. It can also be used to obtain Continuing Education credits.

Is Continuing Education required?

All members are required to obtain 20 Continuing Education hours each year after their first year of membership.
